Branham Newsletter

8/17/17

Good Evening Branham Students and Families:

Thank you all for a very successful opening of school! Our students have been wonderful, and our staff continue to comment on their kindness and enthusiasm for learning.  Generally you can expect to hear from me about twice a month, but I will be sending messages out a bit more frequently at the start of the year since there are many important reminders we want to share.

Upcoming Events:

  • TOMORROW Friday, 8/18Back to School Dance, Branham Quad, 7:00pm – 10pm (Students who want to leave before 9:30 will need parent approval.)

  • Monday, 8/21Solar Eclipse! (9:01 => 10:15 => 11:38; Several classes are preparing to watch the event – safely- here at school. The next similar eclipse is not until 2045!)

  • Monday, 8/21Start of Branham’s Homework Club, room 45, 2:45 – 4pm (M, T, TH each week for the remainder of the school year)

  • Friday, 8/25Branham vs. Leigh Football Game, Branham HS  (JV plays at 4pm, Varsity at 7pm. Join us for our annual rivalry game!)

  • Tuesday, 8/29 – Back to School Night: 6:30pm – 9:00pm (More details coming soon.)

Other Information:

1) Student ID Cards: All students must get a student ID card and are expected to carry it with them at all times while on the school campus or during school-sponsored events. ID’s are needed to check-in for Tutorial as well as school activities. If an ID card is lost, students can get a replacement ID in the main office for a $5 fee.

2) Food Deliveries: Our school cafeteria is open and serving a variety of tasty and healthy food options. The menu will expand next week once the rest of the staff are in place. Any food deliveries brought from outside the school MUST be brought to the main office.  Parents can notify students that the food is there for pick-up.  Having items delivered to the office rather than the parking lot makes it much easier for us to keep track of what is being brought on our campus and helps us ensure the safety of all students.  If you have any questions about this, please contact administration.

3) Parking Lot: We understand that our parking lot is difficult to navigate and are working with the City of San Jose to help achieve the best flow possible. They are evaluating the timing of traffic lights on both Meridian and Branham and are considering adjustments to them during peak times. We are working toward having two options: drivers either enter from Branham and exit onto Meridian (at Portobello), or enter from Meridian and exit onto Branham. If you are picking up/dropping off your student, please follow one of these routes rather than trying to ‘snake’ through the parking lot. In the meantime, if you want to avoid traffic, plan to drop off before 7:45am and pick up after 2:45 when streets are less crowded.

4) Attendance: Please see the attached sheet for Branham’s updated attendance policy. If students aren’t in class, they can’t learn. If they arrive late, it is disruptive to the class and teacher, and the late student ends up spending the rest of the class period trying to catch up rather than focusing on the learning.

Have a great week!

Cheryl Lawton
Branham Principal

Acompáñenos a nuestro partido anual)

Atentamente,

Cheryl Lawton
Directora de Branham High School

Dear Branham Students and Families:

I hope this message finds you well and you have been having a wonderful summer.  As August approaches and we get closer to the start of the 2017-18 school year, I would like to provide you with some additional details about the registration process, the opening of school, and reminders about important policies from our student/parent handbook.

REGISTRATION:

Hopefully you have already received hard copies of my welcome letter and district registration information with directions and your unique log-in code*. This year, most of the documents will be submitted online. In order to register/check-in on your scheduled day, you MUST first complete this online process. Upon completion of the online process, you will be prompted to print the Emergency Card form shown below. *Each family has a unique log-in code that was sent in the welcome letter packet from technology services. If you do not have the paper, please come to Branham’s Main Office with picture ID.

This Emergency Card (including a parent/guardian signature and date at the bottom) is the only document that MUST be returned on the student’s scheduled registration date.

Other documents that need to be printed and returned are the voluntary school-site documents for items such as pictures, yearbook, ASB card, etc.  Regarding these items, many families mentioned that they had difficulty accessing our online store over the past two weeks. We have fixed the issue and things should now be running smoothly.

Students who cannot attend their scheduled Registration day can attend a make-up session on Friday, 8/11 from 12pm – 3:00pm. (We recommend that students make every effort to attend their scheduled time, however, as the lines will be long on Friday!) If students cannot attend either day, students can turn in their paperwork on the first day of school. Students will not be able to attend classes until the process is complete.

If families do not have computer/printer access to complete the online process or print the form, they may come to Branham’s Main Office to use one of our school computers.

CONSTRUCTION (Thanks to Measure AA passed last November):

In order to make room for new buildings on the Branham campus, 12 portable classrooms are being placed near the tennis courts. These will provide temporary swing space to house teachers displaced during the planned construction of a new STEM facility and additional classrooms.

Also, all drinking fountains are in the process of being updated with water bottle filling stations. These will be ready by the opening of school and available in locations throughout the campus.

A district mailer will be sent home in the next few weeks listing plans for the work to be done and also asking for community input on specific details that are yet to be determined.

SCHOOL OPENING

The first day of school is Monday, August 14.  School starts promptly at 8am.  For those new to our campus, please be aware that traffic around the school gets congested for about 20 minutes before and after the start and end of the school day. Please plan drop-offs and pick-ups accordingly.

Any students who have not completed the Registration/Check-in prior to the start of school should plan to arrive early on Monday as they will need to turn in their signed emergency form prior to attending classes.

PARKING

This year, student parking in the Branham lot will be by permit only. Permits will be available on 8/3/17 on a first-come, first served basis, starting with the seniors between 9:00am-11:00am. Any remaining permits will be made available to our 11th graders, also on a first-come, first-served basis from 2:00pm-4:00pm.  A limited number of permits will also be held for other students on the basis of need and can be applied for through the main office.

Students parking on campus must park in designated spots and the permit must be prominently shown hanging from the rearview mirror. Students parking without a displayed permit will be given one warning through the first two weeks of school. After a warning has been given, a fine will be charged each time the permit is not displayed and the student is subject to revocation of the permit.  Any students caught abusing their use of the parking lot, parking illegally, leaving campus during the school day without permission, or violating the parking contract are subject to immediate revocation of their permit.

FOOD and SUPPLY DELIVERIES

ALL items delivered to students at school must be brought to the main office with the student’s name and grade. Students can pick up their delivered items at the office during non-class time. Deliveries to students in the parking lot are not allowed and are subject to confiscation. Having students go to the parking lot for deliveries is both disruptive and potentially dangerous as we are not able to monitor what is being distributed by the public to our students. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Please help us maintain a safe and secure campus! If you have questions about this policy, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We look forward to a great year!

Good Evening Branham Students and Families:

We hope this message finds you well. In addition to general information and updates, we have a variety of events coming up over the next few weeks of which we want to remind you or make you aware.

General Information:

Holidays and No-School Days:

  • Branham will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day tomorrow Friday, 11/11/16.
  • We will also be closed during the week of Thanksgiving, Monday 11/21 – Friday 11/25/16.
  • Winter Break runs from Monday 12/19/16 – Monday 1/2/17. (Students return to school on Tuesday, January 3.)

Election Reflection:

This week’s election results have affected many in our country very deeply, particularly our students. Emotions are running high, and we encourage our students to channel those emotions in positive ways.  Many of the Branham staff modified their curriculum this week in order to give opportunities for students to express their feelings in a safe environment, whether in support or in opposition to the results.

There has been some talk of students protesting the election by leaving class or leaving campus in the middle of the school day on Monday. During school hours, students are under our supervision and our #1 goal is to keep them safe.  We are asking for your assistance in explaining to them why it is not advised or permissible to leave class or campus, and encourage them to participate in other positive outlets.

Teachers may allow time in advisory or other classes (if students choose) to write an anonymous letter to the next president letting him know anything they want him to know--anything they are feeling, or are worried about, or are celebrating. This will provide students with an opportunity to work through whatever they are feeling in a safe way.  Depending on the mood on campus on Monday and in the days that follow, we are also considering other activities during lunch.

Today our Superintendent, Dr. Bob Bravo, sent a message out to all district staff.  I am including it here for your reference, as this represents all that is CUHSD and especially our inclusive Branham High community.  "I want to make it clear, and I ask you to do likewise to any students made anxious by the results of the presidential election, that our district will support all members of its community. We will uphold democratic values by being an inclusive place that honors both diversity and diversity of opinion."

If you have ideas, concerns or recommendations regarding how we can better support our students, please feel free to share them with me, clawton@cuhsd.org.

The cost is $20. The test will be on Wednesday, Oct. 19th during the school day. • Off Grounds (Off Campus) Pass Procedures for Parents/Guardians: If you need to pick up your student for an appointment during the school day, we ask that you call the attendance office IN ADVANCE to arrange for an Off Grounds Pass.  Branham’s phone number is 626-3407, press 1 and then 4 for the attendance secretary.  It is sometimes difficult and disruptive to classrooms to locate a student at only a moment’s notice.

You should have a meeting place with your student, ie: by the ‘Rock’, near the flagpole, etc. Your students should plan to pick up their Off Grounds Pass before school, morning break, or lunch in Student Services. Thank you very much for your cooperation. Branham High School 408-626-3407. Press 1 for the Attendance office. Press 4 for the Attendance Secretary

  • Deliveries of food and other items during the school day:  Help us keep our campus safe!  If you (parents/guardians) need to drop off lunch or other items to your student during the school day, we ask that you bring the items to the main office and notify your student to pick them up there. Please do not have students pick up items in the parking lot.  We greatly appreciate your cooperation. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact me or any of our site administrators.
