School & District Policies

The Campbell Union High School District Board of Trustees recently adopted Board Policy 5142.08 to help ensure safe school campuses and safe routes to and from school. While the District continues to encourage healthy and sustainable transportation options, including traditional bicycles, increasing concerns regarding student safety, traffic congestion, and the growing use of high-powered electric vehicles have prompted the adoption of additional safety measures.

What Devices Are Permitted?

Students may continue to ride traditional bicycles to school.

Students may also bring a Class 1 e-bike to campus if it meets California legal requirements and has not been modified. Class 1 e-bikes must be walked on campus and parked in designated bicycle rack areas.

What Devices Are Not Permitted?

Students may not bring the following devices onto any CUHSD campus:

• Class 2 E-Bikes (any e-bike equipped with a throttle)
• Class 3 E-Bikes
• E-motos, electric motorcycles, mopeds, and electric dirt bikes 
• Electric scooters & electric skateboards/boards
• Any modified e-bike exceeding legal speed/power limits

Note: Prohibited devices may not be parked, stored, or charged on campus.

Why Was This Policy Adopted?

The Board considered a number of safety concerns, including increasing reports of injuries involving electric bikes and e-motos, congested school arrival and dismissal conditions, the operation of non-street-legal vehicles by minors, and the difficulty of distinguishing between legal and illegal motorized devices on campus.

Our primary goal is to maintain a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors while continuing to support active transportation whenever possible.

What to Expect at the Start of the School Year

During the opening weeks of school, administrators and campus supervisors will work with students and families to ensure everyone understands the new requirements.

Students who bring prohibited devices to campus will be subject to the following progressive consequences:

• First violation: Written warning
• Second violation: The device will be secured by the school and must be retrieved by a parent or guardian
• Additional interventions or consequences may be implemented if violations continue

How Families Can Help

Before the first day of school, please:

• Review this policy with your student.
• Confirm that any e-bike used for transportation is a legal Class 1 e-bike.
• Ensure students understand safe riding practices and traffic laws.
• Explore alternative transportation options if your student currently uses a prohibited device.
